Posted: 10 months ago I think it's about time Sony starts selling some PS3's. The once uncontended leader of the industry with less than 15% marketshare is scary. However, now that BluRay has killed HDDVD and PS3s start at $400, MS should start to worry. Shortage or not, the fact that Sony can now sell a PS3 to American consumers is a threat. MS' console dominance comes from the US (the worlds largest video game revenue generator) and if it starts losing US, then it earns the Bronze Medal worldwide. MS should seriously think about slashing the price of the 360 by $150 (to make up for the lack of a BluRay player) to really break mainstream ground. Imagine a Pro 360 at $199 and the Elite for $250. Mainstream America will swoop them up in a heartbeat and continue to leave Sony's American presense dead.

I'd guess that we'd see 2-3 price drop before X-mas 2008 just to reach those prices. And they are having supply shortages without a price drop. A price drop would only make the demand harder to keep up with. Companies almost always try a pack-in game/bundle before doing a price drop.
Does the price of the Xbox 360 need to come down to better compete with the perceived value of the PS3 (which looks more valuable now that Blueray has the format war won)? In a word, Yes. |
